- Former Malawian president Joyce Banda, the first female leader of the country, has decided to withdraw from the upcoming presidential election to support the main opposition candidate, Lazarus Chakwera, due to the realization that no opposition candidate can win alone.
- Banda's term as president was marked by a corruption scandal called Cashgate, where millions of dollars were stolen from government funds, leading to her loss in the 2014 election and suspension of foreign aid contributions.
