- Kenyan music streaming startup Smubu has quickly grown to 200,000 active users and 100,000 tracks in just 18 months, aiming to make African music easily accessible while ensuring fair revenue for artists.
- The platform, founded in 2018, plans to expand internationally, starting with East Africa and eventually moving to the West, with a focus on providing a great user experience and supporting African musicians.
Great to see that Kenya is developing the continent's first locally-built music application. I think it was time that we developed our own music app with just the same features as the international ones if not better, providing African music and is being handled by Africans and Smubu is just the app. I'll be waiting to hear that it is now available for the whole continent.
I'm not from Kenya, but as an African, this is a really proud piece of news. I feel some kind of kinship towards this progress. I'd like for such music startup to proliferate and also get to Nigeria. As you have rightly pointed out, it is high time Africans started having some form (total) of control over their music. This is a welcome development and this new 200k user landmark reached by smubu is an indication that it is really welcomed in Kenya. Well done.
