- 16 southern African countries in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) have agreed to make Kiswahili a formal language in the region, with Tanzania's President urging for its quick adoption.
- Kiswahili will first be used for spoken communication at the Council and Summit levels before becoming an official written language within SADC, joining English, Portuguese, and French as the fourth official language.
