Burkina Faso extends military rule by five years

Burkina Faso's military government, led by Capt Ibrahim Traoré, has decided to extend junta rule for another five years, allowing Capt Traoré to run in the next presidential election.
The decision was made after a national consultation meeting in the capital city, Ouagadougou, and the new transition period will start on July 2 this year, with the possibility of holding elections earlier if the security situation allows.
The move has drawn criticism from international and human rights groups for alleged human rights violations in the country's fight against Islamist groups.
