Looks like the company at the heart of this, Mkango Resources, is already close to a deal with the Pentagon (https://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-rareearths-pentago...).
Since all this seems to stem from the strained US-China trade relationship, I wonder if China will try to get into the mix. Burundi is another place that potentially has these rare earth minerals, so maybe they could be the other proxy.
It sounds good for Malawi as they need the influx of cash, but it's a bit concerning that this stems from a dispute between two superpowers.
